Trent Severn Waterway Central Bundle Infrastructure Project

Last fall, Dufferin Aggregates and Dufferin Concrete collaborated to win a contract from EBC Inc., a long-time customer of the Québec’s material divisions, valued at $3.1 million for aggregates and concrete work along the 386-kilometre Trent Severn Waterway. The awarded project is part of a larger scale infrastructure project being undertaken to improve structural integrity and public safety along Ontario’s Trent Severn Waterway, while protecting its heritage value and character.

The Trent Severn Waterway is a major network of locks, bridges and dams known as Canada’s inland passageway, connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Huron. The repair and asset replacement work to be completed is at the Douro Dam – Lock 24 and Otonabee Dam – Lock 23 areas, located not far from Peterborough, Ontario. These are considered historic sites and primarily used by leisure boaters, campers and wilderness seekers looking to explore and enjoy nature. Rehabilitating these sites while maintaining the visitor experience is a project priority.

The Douro Dam Reconstruction project for Park Canada consists of the complete replacement of the centennial dam on the Trent- Severn Waterway, using 15,000 cubic metres of concrete and about 75,000 tonnes of aggregates.

The project at Lock 24 is a high-risk project due to the environmental constraints and the high visibility of the Otonabee River. The complete replacement will be done in two phases, including construction of temporary installations (temporary over deck, bridges, cofferdams), dewatering, native and rock excavation, concrete work, installation of miscellaneous metals and wooden stop logs, underwater concrete demolition of the existing dam, and site rehabilitation. Our divisions have earned the trust of EBC and in turn will be supplying both the concrete and aggregates required for these projects.

We will be involved in the temporary work by supplying rock fill material (50-500mm Washed Rip Rap) to build cofferdam (hybrid between rock fill and sheet pile cofferdam) and granular material for temporary access roads/laydown areas as well as in the permanent work by supplying concrete for the new structure and aggregates for permanent backfill and roads. CRH Canada work on this project began in December 2018 and will continue through to June 2020.
