Active Rehabilitation
Dufferin Aggregates is committed to the responsible stewardship of the natural environment; actively seeking opportunities to create diversified and connected natural systems. Our progressive and award winning rehabilitation efforts are an ongoing activity at all of our sites, to recreate landforms for eventual uses such as conservation, recreation and agriculture.
In 2016, there were approximately 7,000 trees planted at Dufferin Aggregates sites.
In 2017, as part of Earth Day events at the Acton, Milton, Paris and Mosport sites, approximately 6,000 native trees, shrubs and grasses were planted with Scouts Canada and local schools.
Several of our sites have won numerous industry and community awards for property enhancement, progressive rehabilitation and community relations.
Our Milton quarry proudly donated 1,000 acres of land to Conservation Halton as part of our rehabilitation program.
Biodiversity
Dufferin Aggregates runs an extensive biodiversity and restoration program across its quarries and pits in Canada. The Milton Quarry is a designated World Biosphere area and progressive rehabilitation has created new habitats for wildlife. More than one third of the area permitted for extraction has been restored to wetlands, meadows, lakes and wooded areas. Ongoing biodiversity monitoring shows that 120 bird species, 37 butterfly species and 6 amphibian species now use the rehabilitated area.
Biodiversity Enhancement
The Acton Quarry’s Ecological Enhancement Plan involves creating and enhancing forest, wetland, and grassland habitat over the next 15 years. As part of this plan, an amphibian breeding pool was created on site and 7 species of amphibians have been identified by a qualified ecologist.
We also run a seed collection program from our locations to enable replanting with species native to these locations.
Sustainable Solutions
Dufferin Aggregates is committed to supplying quality, sustainable materials to support the growth and development of the communities we all live, work and play in. We manage our portfolio of sustainable products with the same care and commitment to our customers, our communities and the environment as we do our operations and traditional products.
We are proud to provide a variety of sustainable solutions like certified aggregate, recycled concrete aggregate and recycled asphalt pavement that lessen the burden on the environment by ensuring environmentally sound extraction of materials, reducing the need for virgin aggregate where possible and providing a use for returned concrete and asphalt, keeping the materials out of landfill.

Recycled Aggregate
Recycled concrete aggregate and recycled asphalt aggregate can be used in place of virgin aggregate in a variety of applications. When used in large-scale construction projects, these materials can make a big difference in the overall environmental impact, preserving resources for future generations.
The use of recycled or reclaimed materials in lieu of virgin aggregates is permitted as part of the Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS). OPSS 1010 – Base, Subbase, Select Subgrade and Backfill Material – allows for replacement of virgin aggregate up to 100% recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in Granular A, M, S and B Types I and III material. It also allows for up to 30% recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) – whether that is with virgin aggregate or RCA material. To ensure material performance, Dufferin Aggregates recycled products are tested for compliance of gradation and physical property requirements in accordance with OPSS 1010.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has been a leader in using recycled material in base, subbase and asphaltic pavements since the 1970’s. MTO also permits the use of recycled aggregates in road granular in 400 series highways in Ontario as base and subbase material. The use of recycled aggregates by the MTO and numerous Ontario municipalities demonstrates the value of recycled aggregates as a viable alternative to virgin materials.

Our Process
At Dufferin Aggregates, we manage a stringent process to ensure our recycled material meet our customers’ expectations. Our processes around receiving and sorting, technical and sales support to ensure appropriate material-to-application matching and robust Quality Management System (QMS) ensure that the recycled material we provide our customers is clean, rigorously tested and used in appropriate applications and mixes to ensure performance and quality.
Certified Aggregate – Cornerstone Standards Council
In February 2016, in a landmark announcement, the Cornerstone Standard’s Council (CSC) officially recognized CRH Canada’s Dufferin Aggregates Acton Quarry as the first quarry in the world to receive certification as a supplier of responsibly sourced stone, sand and gravel. The CSC is a non-profit organization focused on engaging industry and community stakeholders in the on-the-ground application of its Responsible Aggregate Standard in order to build a market for certified aggregate materials.
The seven principles that are the foundation for the Cornerstone certification are consistent with the way Dufferin Aggregates has operated its sites for many years, and we believe, an important mechanism towards ensuring a sustainable future.
CRH Canada and Dufferin Aggregates are extremely proud to have received the first certification and hope that this achievement will be a catalyst for the industry. This certification is a testament to our commitment to address the demand for aggregates that consider community and environmental needs. Now any purchaser of aggregates, be it the public or the private sector, will have the confidence in knowing that they are buying responsibly sourced building material.
CRH Canada in partnership with Environmental Defense is proud to have been among the founding members of the organization.
